Lesson 5

My personal board of advisors ... something I haven't put much thought into before, but this gave me a great opportunity to think about those around me now and those who have had an influence in my life, unbeknownst to them.

I picked as my chair my husband, of course! He is my sounding board, my confidant and keeps me grounded. Next is my daughter Lydia. She has taught me the most about life and about my relationship with Jesus Christ. I can't wait till she can really tell me all about her choice to come to earth in a way to bless my life in so many ways.

Two other people I chose that are living are Betty Robbins and Elder Jeffrey Holland. I'm confidant that Betty and I are kindred spirits, we've known each other longer than we know. She has faced several challenging situations in her life and has shared them with me. She has mentored me with her spirit, not many words have been needed to learn from her. I have been strengthened by so many of Elder Hollands talks and speeches. He explains life in such a real and practical way, and straightforward too! He says it how it is, that is how I communicate too and so having him on my board we would always know where we stand and what we need to do.

I have learned so much from President and Sister Hinckley. They are such great examples of love and commitment with a generous dash of humor. To me they definitely figured out how to have joy in the journey. I'm sure they had their share of trials and struggles, but the way they looked at life could teach me so much.

Two ladies from church history that I would love to sit down and talk with are Eliza R. Snow and Lucy Smith. I love whenever I come across snippets of Eliza R. Snow's talks! She was a fireball! And so devoted to the gospel, her testimony and her Savior. She did not mix words and spoke to the sisters of the church with high expectations. I love her matter-of-factness. She may have come across harsh to some, but to me because she spoke so plain she spoke with love. Lucy Smith is an amazing example of submitting her will to the Father. She was so devoted to the gospel and so supportive of her family. Her life could not have been easy, with the opposition and struggles that her family faced constantly - both temporally and spiritually. She gave up so much to follow Heavenly Father's plan. She was truly a devoted disciple of Christ.
