Lesson 1

Lessons Learned:

At this point and stage of my life my focus is on trusting the spirit to guide me in the direction that my Heavenly Father wants me to go. I do know that I need to actively continue to increase my knowledge academically and spiritually so that I am prepared (as best as I can be) to do the next big thing.

I feel service is my main focus as I look at future "opportunities." I really like what Elder Bednar shared in his devotional talk as president of Ricks College on January 5, 1999 titled, "Your Whole Souls as an Offering Unto Him." He shares his thoughts on D&C 4:2, serving God with all of our "... heart, might mind and strength ...." "... a mighty heart is required for serving God. ... to effectively serve God we also must have a strong mind." You can listen to his talk here.

Lessons Not Yet Learned:

I honestly don't know what I'll be doing next. I don't feel that the "opportunities" that either will be coming or that I am to go after are not necessarily anything to do with my professional career. But I have been wrong before! 

I look forward to developing my bucket list as well as "deconstructing" my fears this semester!

Lesson 11

The lesson this week was on Measuring the Cost: Life Balance. One of the articles that we read, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness had some points stand out to me about true happiness. I get thrown off a little by the use of the term "heroes journey," but maybe it's a way to share with the world one of the purposes of our lives here on earth. I feel that through  prayer, the guidance of the Holy Ghost and our acting on that guidance, we can all realize or remember the purpose we have here on earth. Lesson 6

A couple of things that stood out to me this week as we are reading the book Mastery by George Leonard, were what I can learn as a teacher/leader and what I can learn as a student. A student shouldn't try and push through "mastering" something by wanting to go to the next step as quickly as possible. The longer we practice and work on mastering something, the more ingrained, natural and "mastered" that concept or skill becomes to us. I think that goes along very well with faith. The more we persevere with faith, hope and patience, the more we will learn and the deeper our understanding becomes. As a teacher, we shouldn't approach teaching to prove all that we know, or even that we know more than the student, but provide our students with the opportunity to learn, experiment, share and even prove what they are learning to the other students as well as the teacher. Lesson 10

This week I had the assignment of interviewing an entrepreneur and writing a paper about our interview. I tweaked this a little, since someone I would look to as a mentor would not be in a business setting. 😊 I interviewed my sweet 80 year old friend Betty Robbins. She has been a mentor for me for several years, probably close to 14! One of the things I've been able to learn from her is her focus on the gospel and her family. I have felt especially close to her because of her taking care of her son for 14 years after he suffered a TBI in a car accident, followed by a stroke, and needed total care.  Before I interviewed Betty, I wrote down what I wanted to get out of the interview and what would make it successful. "I would like to gain a stronger understanding of trusting the Lord’s timing, trusting that Heavenly Father can make more out of my life than I can and doing “great” things can be done in subtle ways."
