Lesson 10

This week I had the assignment of interviewing an entrepreneur and writing a paper about our interview. I tweaked this a little, since someone I would look to as a mentor would not be in a business setting. 😊 I interviewed my sweet 80 year old friend Betty Robbins. She has been a mentor for me for several years, probably close to 14! One of the things I've been able to learn from her is her focus on the gospel and her family. I have felt especially close to her because of her taking care of her son for 14 years after he suffered a TBI in a car accident, followed by a stroke, and needed total care.

Before I interviewed Betty, I wrote down what I wanted to get out of the interview and what would make it successful. "I would like to gain a stronger understanding of trusting the Lord’s timing, trusting that Heavenly Father can make more out of my life than I can and doing “great” things can be done in subtle ways."

I definitely came away with that and much more. Betty has had a lot of "learning opportunities" in her life. She said that she could look back on each of those and see the good that came from them, so she never wished that they hadn't happened.  She has learned to put her trust in Heavenly Father, in His timing and in His plan for her. Her strength and testimony in knowing who she truly is has come from her many life experiences. I'm so grateful to have her as a close friend and mentor. I love Betty!

One of our readings this week was a talk by Elder Dallin Oaks, "The Challenge to Become."

"Most of us experience some measure of what the scriptures call “the furnace of affliction” (Isa. 48:10; 1 Ne. 20:10). Some are submerged in service to a disadvantaged family member. Others suffer the death of a loved one or the loss or postponement of a righteous goal .... Through the justice and mercy of a loving Father in Heaven, the refinement and sanctification possible through such experiences can help us achieve what God desires us to become."

I felt that this talk went closely with my conversation with Betty. We have opportunities to become who our Heavenly Father knows we can become, we just need to be willing to be patient and trust in Him and His plan.
