Lesson 11

The lesson this week was on Measuring the Cost: Life Balance.
One of the articles that we read, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness had some points stand out to me about true happiness. I get thrown off a little by the use of the term "heroes journey," but maybe it's a way to share with the world one of the purposes of our lives here on earth. I feel that through  prayer, the guidance of the Holy Ghost and our acting on that guidance, we can all realize or remember the purpose we have here on earth. We can all learn from our life's experiences, grow from them and share them with others. We are here to help each other through life. If we can see this, our lives will be more fulfilling and we will find the true happiness that our Heavenly Father wants us to have.

Questions from "Attitude on Money."
  • What is your attitude toward money? I believe that money is a stewardship, whether we have a little or have a lot. What we do with that stewardship can bless our lives and the lives of others, or it can hurt our lives.
  • How can your view of money affect the way you live? I think the view you have on money will depend on how it affects your life. If you view it as a way to gain power and prestige, you are going about it in a way that will not bring you happiness and purpose. If your view on money is that it is a way to reach out and help others and further the work of the Lord on the earth and you use money to do this, then you will gain a happiness and joy by doing so.
  • What rules are recommended for prospering? 
  1. Seek the Lord and have hope in him.
  2. Keep the commandments, including temporal ones such as the payment of tithing and fast offerings. 
  3. Think about money and the plan how you can become self-reliant.
  4. Take advantage of chances for learning so you will not be ignorant of these matters.
  5.  Learn the laws upon which the blessings of wealth are predicated. 
  6. Do not send away the naked, the hungry, the thirsty or the sick or those who are held captive.

Lesson 6

A couple of things that stood out to me this week as we are reading the book Mastery by George Leonard, were what I can learn as a teacher/leader and what I can learn as a student. A student shouldn't try and push through "mastering" something by wanting to go to the next step as quickly as possible. The longer we practice and work on mastering something, the more ingrained, natural and "mastered" that concept or skill becomes to us. I think that goes along very well with faith. The more we persevere with faith, hope and patience, the more we will learn and the deeper our understanding becomes. As a teacher, we shouldn't approach teaching to prove all that we know, or even that we know more than the student, but provide our students with the opportunity to learn, experiment, share and even prove what they are learning to the other students as well as the teacher. Lesson 10

This week I had the assignment of interviewing an entrepreneur and writing a paper about our interview. I tweaked this a little, since someone I would look to as a mentor would not be in a business setting. 😊 I interviewed my sweet 80 year old friend Betty Robbins. She has been a mentor for me for several years, probably close to 14! One of the things I've been able to learn from her is her focus on the gospel and her family. I have felt especially close to her because of her taking care of her son for 14 years after he suffered a TBI in a car accident, followed by a stroke, and needed total care.  Before I interviewed Betty, I wrote down what I wanted to get out of the interview and what would make it successful. "I would like to gain a stronger understanding of trusting the Lord’s timing, trusting that Heavenly Father can make more out of my life than I can and doing “great” things can be done in subtle ways."
